Committee responsibilities

Waikato Regional Council has a Joint Management Agreement (JMA) with Te Arawa iwi.

Established through Treaty settlement legislation, the JMA sets out agreed processes that enable iwi participation in resource consent, environmental monitoring, enforcement, and policy and planning matters within the rohe (tribal boundaries) of Te Arawa iwi.

The Committee is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of the JMA.

It provides a shared mechanism for joint decision-making, upholds the principles set out in clause 4 of the JMA, and gives effect to the guardianship provisions established under the Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Raukawa, and Te Arawa River Iwi Waikato River Act 2010.

The Committee works collaboratively to oversee agreed responsibilities, support integrated management of the Waikato River and related activities, and maintain a strong co-governance partnership.
