Waikato Regional Council needs to understand how much people know about environmental issues. We also need to find out if people know that their actions in one part of the region can affect other areas. This information will guide us in setting goals and planning environmental education programmes to fill information gaps.
This indicator monitors people’s knowledge concerning activities that may damage the environment, as measured by a five-point index at the regional, district council, urban and rural level.
In 2016, 46 per cent of respondents had a medium to high level of environmental knowledge.
In the 2013 survey just over a third of respondents (36 per cent) had a medium to high level of environmental knowledge. This is similar to the 2006 survey (33.5 per cent).
In both the 1998 and 2000 surveys, almost four-fifths (79 per cent) of Waikato people had a medium to high level of environmental knowledge.
This indicator is updated every three years. The next update is due in 2019.
