Hydro Power Limited wants to build a new hydro-electric power station on the Upper Waipa River.
The company has applied for resource consents from Environment Waikato to construct a powerhouse on the west side of the River, 2.5 kilometres downstream of Owen Falls.
The proposed scheme relies on pumping water to storage at times of low electricity demand, and generating for the peak market for several hours per day. This will cause fluctuations in the River’s levels.
For the proposal to proceed, land use consent will also be required from Waitomo District Council. The Regional Council will need to consider issues such as the effect on fisheries and hydrological impacts.
The proposal was publicly notified in November this year. Submissions close before Christmas.
