What to plant in kahikatea forest fragments

On this page:
Nurse plants – full sun in exposed sites, planting in sheltered sites or between existing plants, later planting under nurse plants

If you want to plant a new kahikatea stand, start with hardy nurse plants. You can plant these in the open or in well-lit areas between existing shrubs. Kahikatea trees are naturally thin and open, so if you plant them in the open you may wish to densely interplant with hardy shrubs and sedges to keep the weeds down.

If you have an existing kahikatea stand that has been grazed and has no native understory plants, fence it, keep an eye on weeds and wait a couple of years to see if any native plants arrive on their own. You can speed things up by planting some of the shrubs and trees from the first and second list (nurse plants and sheltered areas) around the edge of the stand. The edge plants will help protect the stand from drying winds, and provide a seed source to restock the forest interior. Experiment with a few plants of different species to find out what works best in your situation. Note that fern spores are widely dispersed and will likely turn up on their own.

For information on what to plant in other types of native forest, see our fragment planting guide. If you have a boggy area or pond check out our wetland planting guide.
