Vandals Spill Diesel Into Waikato River

Vandals interfering with a diesel tank on a parked tour bus have spilled about 200 litres of diesel into the Waikato River early this morning.

The tour bus was parked outside Ascot Lodge in Ulster Street when the motel’s hose was put into the bus tank and the diesel flushed out and into nearby stormwater drains. Environment Waikato says Hamilton City Council staff responded quickly and were able to capture a small amount but the rest flowed into the river.

Because of the rain and difficult bank access, Environment Waikato was not able to put down booms to contain the diesel. Downstream water users were notified but the diesel is expected to cause minimal environmental damage.

Residents in the area have reported a strong diesel smell which should dissipate quickly.
