Staff make recommendations over proposed regional policy

Regional council staff recommendations on submissions over the proposed new Waikato Regional Policy Statement (RPS) are now publicly available.

The staff recommendations will be an important source of information for the hearing committee on the proposed RPS, which is due to begin sitting at 10am on Monday 13 February in Hamilton at the regional council’s offices at 401 Grey St.

Publication of the staff recommendations now means submitters are aware of the recommendations well ahead of the committee’s hearings getting underway.

The report from staff to the committee contains analysis of, and recommendations on, each of the 4465 submission points. It covers whether staff think the submissions should be accepted or rejected, or accepted in part, and provides reasons for the recommendation.

Hearings are open to the public and the starting date will be notified in the Waikato Times and at www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/rpsreview before then. Venues for hearing sittings will vary after initially starting at the regional council – these venues will be publicly notified.

Decisions on the submissions are expected to be released in November 2012.

The RPS provides a framework for the integrated management of the region’s natural and physical resources and is required to be reviewed at least every 10 years.

For more information on the RPS review and to view the staff report visit www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/rpsreview or contact Elizabeth McKnight on 0800 800 401.
