Raw sewage has been flowing into the Ruatahau Stream near Te Awamutu after a pipe near a pump station blew out.

Environment Waikato staff are monitoring the spill and the pipe is being urgently repaired, but it is not known how much sewage flowed through the break and into the stream, which is a tributary of the Puniu River. The pump station is on the corner of Bridgeman Street and is not a major pumping area.

The Medical Officer of Health has been notified, and people in the residential area near the stream have been warned to stay away from the water in the meantime. The sewage is likely to have been well diluted. Where it has flowed over land to the stream, lime is being applied to clean up the area.
