Raglan Information Centre seeks environmental standard

Environment Waikato is to assist Raglan’s Information Centre to achieve Green Globe 21 certification of its operations.

The certification is an environmental benchmarking and performance standard for the tourism industry, assessing the organisation’s environmental performance. The Centre needs to produce a report on its energy and water consumption per visitor, employees living within 20 km, biodegradable cleaning products used and sale of eco-sourced products.

If it is successful, the Centre hopes to recruit and mentor other Raglan businesses to the programme. The total cost of the project is $12,724, with Trust Waikato contributing $3000 and the Visitor Centre $3000 itself.

Strategic Development Manager Kevin Collins said the project involved an already environmentally active area but one that was under growing pressure as a resort and tourism destination. The project could have a positive effect as a leading example for other businesses in the area.

There would also be an educational benefit to having visitors to the Centre exposed to the idea of environmentally sustainable tourism.
