The names of Waikato Regional Council candidates will be drawn from a hat in a public event this Friday to decide the order in which they will be listed on the voting papers.
As of midday today, the council has received 26 confirmed nominations across the six general and two Maori constituencies, with still more being processed by electoral officers.
In April the council decided that the pseudo-random order would help create a more even playing field for candidates. Under this option, candidates’ names are drawn randomly to determine their order on all voting documents.
Nominations close at midday on Friday, 16 August, but potential candidates are being reminded not to leave submitting their forms until the last minute or they risk missing out.
The voting papers will be posted to voters between 20-25 September and must be sent back by midday on Election Day, 12 October 2013.
People wanting more information about Friday’s draw, or the elections more generally, can contact Waikato Regional Council on freephone 0800 800 401 or go to www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/elections.
