A small but positive group of 16 interested people attended a meeting in Huntly last night to discuss proposed possum control for the Hakarimata Range.

The Northern Hakarimata Walkway Committee received funding to control possums in the northern half of the Range. They have enlisted Environment Waikato and DoC to help co-ordinate the operation which is to be done in September.

Almost all the landowners likely to be affected by the possum control have been very supportive, said Environment Waikato’s Biosecurity Officer, Phillip Brown.

“It was disappointing to have relatively few people there, but perhaps that’s an indication that the discussions we’ve had with landowners recently have been successful.”

If people couldn’t attend the meeting but want to know more about the possum control, they can call Environment Waikato for more information.
