Waikato businesses with plastic wrap going to waste now have a productive way to re-use it.

The Waste Exchange, a free data base for business and industry linking waste products with organisations which can re-use it, now has a way to recycle large amounts of plastic waste. The Waste Exchange is working with Hamilton firm Materials Processing Limited, identifying where plastics can be collected and recycled for processing.

Co-ordinator Pippa Russell says plastic is a valuable resource and should not be mixed and buried with other wastes.

"Markets for recycled plastic vary from time to time both here and overseas, but there are markets and you just have to have the right people processing and driving the product.

"Collection of some plastics may cost, but it is cheaper than paying for disposal," she says.

Firms with small amounts of plastic can leave it at collection points around Hamilton, such as the Hamilton Organic Recycling Centre or the Refuse Transfer Station.

The Waste Exchange also has outlets for drums that are not too contaminated and 20 litre plastic containers.
