Two groups have appealed resource consents granted to the Waikato District Council for discharging treated effluent into the Waikato River from the Meremere wastewater treatment plant.

The consents to allow an upgrade to the plan were granted by Environment Waikato last month.

Both the Mercer Rowing Club and local iwi, Ngati Naho, have requested that the consents be revoked or that several conditions be added.

Ngati Naho says that consultation with them over the consent process was inadequate and did not recognise their kaitiaki status.

The two groups also expressed concerns about the location and safety of the pipeline and diffuser, the lack of treatment safeguards and a range of treatment options.

Environment Waikato will discuss the appeals with the appellants and the Waikato District Council.
