It’s less fuss to travel by bus to your favourite shopping destinations this festive season.

Waikato Regional Council’s public transport team has been liaising with Hamilton’s shopping centres to confirm late opening hours will coincide with some bus routes.

“It will take the hassle out of parking for that last minute Christmas shopping and make meals out with friends and colleagues that bit easier,” said public transport operations manager, Ben Barlow.

The last Night Rider buses for this year will run on the last weekend before Christmas (21-22 December), resuming on Friday 21 February 2014.

“Key routes in Hamilton will be operating on Christmas Day, and people wanting an after-lunch walk around the lake or gardens can get there on the 29 Lake and Gardens service.

“Travelling to those post-Christmas shopping sales will also be easier, with most bus services running on Boxing Day,” Mr Barlow said.

Bus passengers are being encouraged to check timetables by visiting www.busit.co.nz for temporary service changes being introduced from Wednesday 25 December to Sunday 5 January.

Data for previous years shows a sharp drop in patronage over the Christmas-New Year period due to school and university holidays and many businesses closing. So, most BUSIT services across the region will operate to special holiday period timetables.

To find out more, visit www.busit.co.nz or call 0800 4 BUSLINE (0800 4 2875 463). The call centre will continue to operate around-the-clock over the Christmas-New Year period.

Meanwhile, the BUSIT counter at the transport centre in Hamilton will close at lunchtime on Tuesday 24 December, reopening on Monday 6 January.
