Environment Waikato is to grant $5000 to replace a public walkway leading to Lake Taupo.

Acacia Bay homeowner Geoff Prestidge applied for funding with the support of Taupo District Council to replace a walkway through his gully on Mapara Rd, which is used by the public to get to the beach. The existing rough track was poorly located and subject to flooding and erosion. Recent removal of large exotic trees had created an opportunity to plant native vegetation and relocate the walkway to a safer spot.

The owner plans to rebuild the walkway, including panels identifying native plants and birds, with the help of Taupo District Council, which will be responsible for maintenance.

Strategic Development Manager Kevin Collins said the project would restore native plants in a heavily visited area and aid public access to the Lake.
