Environment Waikato staff are working on containing a diesel spill in the southern Coromandel Harbour this afternoon after a 40 foot ferro cement launch holed after it slipped its mooring overnight.

Oil spill containment equipment is being used to mop up the spill, which occurred when the boat holed on shore. The boat is holding about 400 litres of light diesel, but leakage appears to be minimal. Harbourmaster Richard Williams used mop-up pads to soak up the small amount of oil. The spill has ceased and is unlikely to cause damage to nearby marine farms or bird feeding areas.

High tide is about 2pm today, and is expected to wash away remains of the spill.
