Ratepayers in Waihi’s residential area received a bit of shock with their latest rates bill – the amount they pay to Environment Waikato for the Waihou Valley Flood Protection Scheme appeared to have shot up 440 percent.
An incorrect rate in the dollar was applied by Hauraki District Council to the Waihou Valley Flood Protection Scheme rate for residents in the Waihi Urban area.
Some residents noticed their annual Scheme rate had risen from $18 to 81 or from $42 to $171 with the miscalculation.
But they won’t have to pay the extra.
The District Council is currently addressing the problem. The Council has identified all the residents affected by the error and has written to each ratepayer outlining the options available.
Waihi urban ratepayers are encouraged to contact the Hauraki District Council on 0800 734 834, or 07 862 8609, to discuss the options available to them. Environment Waikato says if residents want to recalculate their correct Scheme rate, they should multiply their land value (which is on the rate account) by the correct class rate which is 0.0004971539 cents.
