Environment Waikato works on toxic oil spill

Environment Waikato Ready Response staff are working to clean up a spill of toxic transformer oil close to the Waitakaruru Stream near Morrinsville.

The oil spilled from a railway bladder containing 20,000 litres of transformer oil early this morning at the Morrinsville Railway Yards. It appeared the bladder may have been tampered with.

It spilled close to a drain flowing into a tributary of the Waitakaruru stream, which flows into the Piako River. No water is taken from the river or stream and at this stage no oil appears to have moved into the stream.

The flow is being contained with booms and a sucker truck is being used to collect the oil. Most appears to have spilled onto the ground or is trapped by vegetation.
