Environment Waikato is planning some hot incentives for safe Easter drivers next week.
In conjunction with police, drivers stopped for roadside checks of warrant of fitness and registration will be given a packet of hot cross buns with the message "We'd all like to see fewer crosses this Easter. Please drive safely" attached. Buns will also be given away at several service stations throughout the Waikato. Wednesday, April 7 is also World Health Roadsafe Day.
Road safety billboards around the Waikato Region will feature new messages, including “If there’s any doubt, don’t pull out”, “D.I.4.Y. – drive safely”, “Lose Control – Lose Life”, “Human Error causes 98% of all deaths and injuries” and “James, yet another DEAD good driver”.
Environment Waikato Regional Land Transport Committee Chairman Councillor David Peart said traffic accidents killed 1.2 million people around the world last year.
"Our accident rates are alarmingly high in the Waikato. We all need to heed the World Health Day message that road safety is no accident. In the wrong hands, a driver’s licence is a licence to kill.”
He said road accidents killed at least one person every 30 seconds.
