Council funds for river education programme

Environment Waikato has granted $5000 to the Te Whei Ao Te Ao Marama Environmental Education Trust, based in Ngaruawahia.

The Trust runs environmental education programmes focused on the health of the Waikato River. The grant from the Environmental Initiatives Fund will allow the Trust to expand its educational programmes. It has run successful one-day programmes but wishes to expand to three-day programmes.

The enlarged programme will incorporate riparian planting, water quality sampling and educational sessions on the condition of the Waikato River. The overall goals of the trust include:

Conducting river based educational and environmental programmes for youth
Promoting the advancement of water safety through educational programmes
Fostering the revitalisation of river culture and associated knowledge
Encouraging the use of the Maori language and customs
Helping to restore flora and fauna along the Waikato River.
The trust also has received funding from the WEL Energy Trust.
