Environment Waikato has cancelled its Passenger transport and Road Safety Subcommittees in favour of a beefed up Regional Land Transport Committee.
The Council says passenger transport issues are best dealt with in conjunction with territorial authorities, and inter-Regional passenger transport is best dealt with at the Regional Committee level.
The Road Safety Subcommittee included representatives from Hamilton City and other local authorities, commercial operators, education, health, Police, Transit, ACC, Land Transport Safety Authority and private road users. Key road safety partners had indicated a desire for a forum to facilitate more co-ordinated and effective road safety planning for the Region.
The existing Committee recommended in December that membership of the Regional Land Transport Committee include cultural and economic representatives, DoC, public transport, health, rail, Police, Hamilton City and two representatives from the newly formed Land Transport New Zealand (representing funding and safety).
Commercial road user and water transport representatives will be disestablished and their expertise brought onto technical working parties as required.
