Following the recent highly successful Raglan Bar crossing days on the Waikato’s west coast, Coastguard units are offering two Coromandel bar crossing days with support from Waikato Regional Council and the Ministry of Fisheries.
The first, a Whangapoua Bar crossing day, will be held on 5 January at the Matarangi Fire Station. It will start at 10am, with a $10 charge for Whitianga Coastguard members and $30 for non-members. To register call 07 866 2883 or email email@example.com
A Tairua Bar crossing day will be held on 19 January at the Pauanui Fire Station, starting at 9am. The course is free to Tairua Pauanui Coastguard members and $30 for non members. To register email firstname.lastname@example.org
The regional council’s navigation safety programme manager Nicole Botherway encouraged boaties to take up the two Coastguard course offerings.
“The Whangapoua and Tairua bars are both treacherous and boaties need to make sure they’re aware of the risks and get some local knowledge,” Ms Botherway said.
Ministry of Fisheries and regional council harbourmasters will attend the courses to provide fishing and boating information.
