Waikato motorists are being encouraged to drive with their lights on at all times to help ensure they can be seen by other road users, particularly in the region’s notorious fogs.

A “be safe, be seen” billboard and radio advertising road safety winter campaign is beginning across the region, and will last for several months.

The campaign, funded by Land Transport NZ, is coordinated by Environment Waikato and involves the police, the region’s local councils and other road safety partners.

“Being seen easily helps avoid accidents, particularly in winter or in our wicked Waikato fogs,” says Environment Waikato’s road safety spokesperson Jo Carling.

“Having your lights on – at all times of the day and night – is a simple and effective way of increasing your visibility. We encourage all motorists to switch on for safety.

“Fog is a contributing factor in a significant number of Waikato accidents, so having lights on is particularly important in our region.”
