Data Set Name:

Data Set Abstract:

The New Zealand Gazetteer of Official Geographic Names (the Gazetteer) is published by the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB). The Gazetteer contains all official names for features within the NZGB's jurisdiction.

Content of Data Set:

The Gazetteer includes the following information for each official name:

official name
gazette or statutory reference
type of feature or place (eg town, mountain, etc)
position (in terms of the New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 (NZTM2000) projection and New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000))
description (where available)
extent (where available).

The Gazetteer is divided into six parts based on the type of place or feature. WRC holds holds copies of 2 parts, New Zealand and Crown Protected Area The files downloaded from LINZ were dated 14 November 2012.

GIS Features:

There are four GIS layers

GIS_ALL.GAZETTEER – New Zealand Gazetteer.

GIS_ALL.GAZETTEER_CPA – Crown Protected Areas Gazetteer

GIS_ALL.GAZETTEER_CPA_NO_NAME - Conservation Units without official names. These conservation units fall within the definition of a NZGB CPA but have been excluded from the Gazetteer because they do not appear to have "official names"

GIS_ALL.GAZETTEER_CPA_NOT_NZGB - Conservation Units not considered NZGB CPAs. These conservation units have been excluded from the Gazetteer because they do not fall under the NZGB legislative definition of a CPA.

Attribute Accuracy:

Macrons

A number of official names contain macrons. While the Gazetteer shows the macrons for these names, care needs to be taken to ensure that they are retained when the names are moved between software packages. The NZGB has compiled a list of official names with macrons to assist in mapping, charting, signage, reporting, legislation, or other official documents. As at time of first loading the Macrons were not able to be stored in WRCs Oracle database so have been omitted, please refer to the list and apply any that are needed in final outputs.

6. Distribution Information

Data Form:

Electronic.

Digital Format:

Tabular (Spreadsheets) data downloaded from LINZ with easting and northing that have been geocoded to create true geometries for storages in WRCs Oracle Spatial database for use by corporate GIS tool.

Useful for when you need to see the names from the NZGB Gazetteer.

Data Set Availability:

Data is freely available from LINZ and all third parties should source it from LINZ. WRC may freely use it for all projects.
