Data Set Name:

Te Puni Kokiri Maori Land – Waikato Region

Data Set Abstract:

Maori Land Parcels collated from Maori Land Court (MLC) hard copy records located in each of the MLC offices (for most of Waikato this is Hamilton, but some areas will be covered by Rotorua and Wanganui). Data was last updated in 1999 and is estimated to be 75% accurate.

Content of Data Set:

Data set consists of two feature classes – Polygon data which details surveyed titles and point data which details un-surveyed titles

Positional Accuracy:

Polygon data (verified parcels) appears to be based on CRS data. Data set was created in 1999 so will reflect CRS data at that time. Positional Accuracy of the Point data (unverified parcels) is unknown.

Data Acquisition History

Data was supplied to Waikato Regional Council in shapefile format in September 2007 by Daran Ponter; Geospatial Solutions. It is a copy of a data set initially supplied to Daran by Te Puni Kokiri.

Period and Frequency of Record:

Data was created in 1996 and updated in 1999. Data has not been updated since this time and is subject to errors.

Data Acquisition Method(s):

This is a one-off supply of data from Geospatial Solutions in September 2007.

4. Data Quality Information

Data Quality:

The data is estimated to be 75% accurate and therefore should only be used as a guide. The data should not be used as an authoritative definition of all land administered by the Maori Land Court.  Users should consult www.MaorilandOnline.govt.nz for an up to date assessment of the current status of titles.

Attribute Accuracy:

The data is estimated to be 75% accurate. Apart from this, attribute accuracy is unknown. A more accurate Maori Land record will not be available until after the Ministry of Justice have completed the five year project to register all unregistered Maori partitions (approx 16,000 nationwide) in the Land Transfer Office.

Completeness:

The data set is unlikely to be complete. It was last updated in 1999.

The data set is not to be passed on to third parties without the instruction of Tai-ranga-whenua Programme Manager (email or phone call sufficient) on all requests for this GIS layer. The data should only be passed on to other local authorities and Iwi organisations – not to commercial organisations such as land developers. Other third parties may source the data from Te Puni Kokiri, Maori Land Court or Geospatial Solutions.
