Regional waste management strategy

Cover of Environment Waikato's Regional Waste Management StrategyWaikato Regional Council's Long Term Plan sets aside funding to invest in achieving waste minimisation in the region. The Waikato Regional Waste Strategy shows how this money will be spent.

The question is:

“If we are serious about minimising waste generation in the region, what is the most important thing that Waikato Regional Council can do?”

The Regional Waste Management Strategy, prepared by a team of people from local authorities and the waste industry, sets out how Waikato Regional Council will contribute to solving the 'waste problem' by:

  • showing by example that it is possible to integrate waste minimisation and energy efficiency into day to day business operations
  • co-ordinating information collection across the region so that decision-makers can make informed decisions on waste management options
  • advocating for the introduction of economic incentives for waste minimisation both locally and nationally
  • ensuring that the regulation of waste disposal and resource recovery sectors doesn't create barriers to waste minimisation
  • co-ordinating waste minimisation programmes (such as education or special waste collections) across the region to reduce duplication and cost to the ratepayer.
