3.6 Damming and Diverting
3.6.1 Issue
In addition to the issues identified in Chapters 3.1 and 4.2, damming and/or diversion of water can have the following adverse effects:
- Increased risk of flooding on neighbouring properties.
- Increased risk of erosion of the bed and banks of lakes, rivers and streams.
- Obstruction of fish passage to the extent that indigenous fish or trout cannot complete their lifecycles.
- Increased channelisation of river systems leading to aquatic habitat loss.
